Foreigners who wish to enter and/or remain in the country in order to settle permanently or fix their domicile in the country can request the type “R” visa if they meet any of the following conditions, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Having been a Colombian national and renounced this nationality.
Being the parent of a Colombian national by birth.
Having stayed in the country for a continuous and uninterrupted period of two (2) years as the main holder of a type “M” visa.
Having stayed in the country for a continuous and uninterrupted period of five (5) years under one of the following conditions:  

a) As the main holder of type “M” visa.
b) As the beneficiary of a type “R” visa.

Having registered direct foreign investment for the minimum stipulated amounts with the International Exchange Department of the Colombian Central Bank, or the body that acts in its stead.
